Thank you to everyone who renewed their RIBO license on or before the grace period deadline of September 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

A copy of your 2024/2025 license is available now in IRIS for downloading and printing.

After logging into IRIS, select the ‘Broker’ or ‘Brokerage’ tile. Next, click the ‘Email License’ button, which is in the lower-left area of the screen.

Townhall: Mandatory Disclosure Guidance (October 17) 

In April 2024, RIBO released Mandatory Disclosures Guidance. Starting October 1, 2024, brokers were expected to comply with this new guidance. 

We encourage all licensees to register to attend our Mandatory Disclosure Guidance Townhall on Thursday, October 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET. It will take place virtually on Microsoft Teams.

You will learn about RIBO’s expectations for disclosure and answers to frequently asked questions about the new requirements.

RIBO at IBAOcon (October 23 and 24)

Wednesday, October 23

  • From 2:50 to 3:10 p.m. ET, RIBO CEO and CISRO Chair Patrick Ballantyne will join CCIR Chair and FSRA Executive VP of Market Conduct Huston Loke on a regulatory “BIP Talk” panel focusing on Ontario-specific and national issues

Update on Council Application Process

As we announced in the summer on our Running for Council webpage, this November, three RIBO Council vacancies will be filled.

The nomination period opened on August 1, and we collected applications until September 20. We conducted interviews with selected candidates from September 30 to October 4.

We are pleased to report that RIBO received a record-breaking 19 applications from candidates interested in serving on Council. It was a drastic increase from the 4 to 6 applications we receive in a typical year. This validates the new process introduced this year with some candidates saying that they would not have run under the old process. We are thrilled to see such a high level of interest in helping to guide and further RIBO’s consumer protection mandate.

Later in October, we will be announcing the recommended candidates as part of our Annual General Meeting package.

Annual General Meeting (November 7)

Our Annual General Meeting is quickly approaching. It will take place on Thursday, November 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. 

Later in October, you will receive a separate email with the package containing the following:

Case Study

As a licensee, you must follow many rules, guidelines, and requirements to remain in good standing and retain your ability to be a licensed broker.  

This series is based on anonymized situations about brokers who were alleged to have breached these rules and guidelines and therefore became the subjects of investigations. The cases are examples of some of these situations. We share them to illustrate the types of conduct licensees should avoid and the associated consequences. 


Kimiko was a RIBO-licensed insurance broker who sent a private message on social media to a professional athlete. That alone would not pose a problem, but in this instance, the comment was homophobic and sexist. The athlete also shared the message publicly.

RIBO received a complaint about the licensee’s alleged behaviour. The complaint was investigated and referred to the Complaints Committee to determine the appropriate outcome.

The Complaints Committee directed the licensee to complete a social media etiquette or ethics course within nine months.

Failure to comply would likely result in further regulatory action against the licensee.

The Complaints Committee decided not to escalate this matter to the Discipline Committee. While the licensee’s conduct raised professional conduct concerns, the Complaints Committee indicated in its decision that they believed that she ‘learned her lesson.’ The Complaints Committee also indicated that having her take a course would be beneficial in educating Kimiko about proper behaviour and giving her a greater understanding of the consequences of her actions and on the importance of complying with the Code of Conduct.

This case illustrates the expectation that RIBO licensees must adhere to the professional and ethical standards as outlined in the Code of Conduct Handbook and regulations. The way a licensee behaves is very important in upholding the profession’s high standards. Acting disrespectfully is unacceptable.

Passing of Doug Grahlman

It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news that Doug Grahlman has passed away in early October.

Doug served on RIBO Council for six years, from 2008 to 2013, holding various roles including Treasurer, Vice-President, and ultimately President in his final year on Council.

In 1972, he founded Chatsworth Insurance Brokers where he worked alongside and shared his passion with his son Scott for the last 30 years.

Doug’s life and career were punctuated by his commitment to giving back to the public and the profession. In addition to being on RIBO Council, he was a former IBAO President and IBAC board member. He will be remembered for his dedication and service. Our sincere condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.
